7 Things to Do After a Sugar Binge

Holidays and sugar go hand in hand. It's fun to dabble and enjoy treats here and there, but we're usually left feeling like garbage after all the cakes, cookies, hot chocolate and alcohol our bodies aren't used to on a daily basis (hello 6 sugar cookies I consumed while baking for that holiday party). Thankfully, there are some things you can do to get back on track after an evening of indulging. Check out my 7 Things to do After a Sugar Binge:

  1. Drink tons of water and green tea with lemon. It will help combat bloat (after you pee it all out), and eliminate some of the excess sodium. The green tea and lemon are diuretics, so they will help your blood pump through your kidneys faster.

  2. Eat protein and fiber. An ideal meal the morning after a sugar binge could be scrambled eggs, steamed spinach and asparagus topped with avocado. The protein and healthy fats will keep you fuller longer, while eating fewer carbs will encourage your body to burn the energy stored from the sugars you ate the night before.

  3. Drink ginger tea to help soothe your stomach.

  4. Sweat it out. You might feel lazy the next day, but push past the feeling and get your body moving. Go for a run, hike or to your favorite hot yoga class. You’ll feel better after, as it will help to eliminate bloat, move the toxins through your system and calm your mind.

  5. Eat high fiber veggies to level out the blood sugar spike - asparagus (also combats bloat since it’s a diuretic), broccoli, cauliflower, sugar snap peas, split peas, lentils and brussels sprouts are all great options.

  6. Pop a probiotic or drink a probiotic supplement - they help with overall digestion. I love Bio-K, but you can also take them in pill form or by eating plain, unflavored yogurt, kefir, miso, kimchi or by drinking kombucha teas.

  7. Don’t freak - meditate, exercise and move on. And get rid of any leftovers you might have laying around the house - you don’t need the temptation.
